Where to Spend All Those Bitcoins? OSM Knows

CoinMap.org

CoinMap.org proudly displays a OSM map where Bitcoins are accepted. In the true nature of open data this is a self service map where the creator does not even maintain the data. If you have a location that you would like to add simply add it using your favorite OSM editor with a tag equal to payment:bitcoin=yes. The map automatically displays all features that contain that tag. Simply zooming into an area, or panning the map will display establishments that take bitcoins as payment. A great concept that allows the data set to grow without the creator needing to spend countless hours updating data sets and re generating updated tiles.

CoinMap.org is using Leaflet as the javascript library to power its map. It uses multiple open source tile sources so that the map view and be changed by the end user.

What is a Bitcoin

Bitcoin is a peer-peer payment system using digital currency as payment. There is no middle man (banks) during a transaction and all exchanges can be done anonymously. Bitcoins are mined or acquired through digital means so there is no physical form of the money such as a bill or actual coin. You can use them to buy services, pizza, subscriptions etc where they are accepted.

If you have a few Bitcoins in your digital wallet you can use the map above to cash them in.

What I like about the map
  • A simple, single focus map
  • Uses OSM and Leaflet Duh
  • Multiple open source map views available
  • Simple instructions to add a new location
  • Instructions are in multiple languages with an easy legend to switch to your language of choice
  • By querying directly from the OSM data source the map is Set-it and Forget-it and lets the community keep the data up to date
  • When zoomed out and viewing a large area the data is clustered so navigation is not cluttered with many pushpins.

And for the Love of God make a map edit today!
